Supplies for growing
There are 2 greenhouse units put together. They went into
operation in the Fall of 1999. The computerized
equipment is state of the art.
A shallow water well is available but reliable so to
prevent any possibility of water shortage, the
greenhouse is also connected to city water. However,
one of the main features of the greenhouse is the small
amount of water it takes to grow the plants.
Liquid fertilizer is added to the water for plant
growth. Cropking is very nice to help with any problems
should the ph not be correct.
Now there is a natural liquid fertilizer available that
is supposed to be very good. In fact, it should even
help with insects and your fruit would be organic. This
would make it a much more valuable crop.
The Hepburns sold all the quality fruit they could grow
to HEB’s Central Markets in
San Antonio
and Austin. A ten pound box of fruit brought $19.50.
(The seconds, or culls, were sold at public market for
$2 a pound.)
Cropking offers a 2 week course of instruction at their
plant to train greenhouse owners and personnel about
production.
